Since most if not all of us have YouTube channels, thought it might be good to discuss some of the changes Google has implemented on YouTube… what you like and dislike.
I'll start:
COMMENTS: For one thing I don't like the see the 'most relevant' comments listed first rather than the latest comment. I like them to be in chronological order so I can reply and know who's made a comment.
For that matter, I don't get notices on when someone has posted a comment on my video like it used to. I suppose I could get email notifications if I want my inbox to be filled, but I like how it used to have an inbox on the YouTube account.
INBOX: speaking of which, it's almost impossible to find the inbox anymore. Maybe they brought it back but for some time they eliminated it altogether. That just doesn't make sense to me.
COMMENT THUMBS UP/DOWN: It appears that one can no longer thumbs down a comment, at least the number associated with ups/downs doesn't change. That's too bad as some comments are really terrible and are well deserving of a low negative rating. It appears that Google is 'liking' the Facebook system where every thing is positive and happy, and everyone is a winner, yay!
GOOGLE PLUS SHARING: During the recent changes in November 2013 Google was insisting that all comments be shared by defaulting all comments as a share, but now, fortunately one can turn that off. Progress. Some might like Google Plus and even like to share there, but I personally like to keep my comments private directly generally at the video or person I'm responding too. If people see it on YouTube and like my comment that's fine, but the idea of strangers on Google Plus who could care less about the video seeing my comment and replying just doesn't appeal to me.
I understand that Google purchased YouTube as an asset, and now they're trying to leverage that asset to enhance their social platform Google Plus, but I find that to be ill conceived. YouTube is an entity onto itself who has grown because of it's functionality into something really great. If Google really cared they might learn lessons from YouTube to make Google Plus really great, instead it appears to me that their changes to YouTube are taking away some of it's magic rather than enhancing it. They should focus on Google Plus and fix it's problems if they can recognize them, and allow people to share vids to Google+ easily, that's all.
What's your thoughts?
