Every now and then a video pops up or a thread asking "how long should I make my videos?" ...or something like that.
This is an "in theory" btw...
Whether you have 10< subs or 6000> you can apply this to your channel. In your channels analytics you can view your "Average view duration." (Audience retention) In the top right where you can view the "last 90 days" or which ever you chose. If you upload frequently, (one or more uploads a week) chose "last 90 days" If you don't upload that often chose a larger time span. This will all depend on how far you want to go back. If the style of your content hasn't changed or you haven't had a huge sudden increase of subs you can view a larger time duration. How ever, if your style of content has changed or if your sub count has had a large and sudden increase, only view back to that point.
Now look at your average view duration, (don't get discouraged if its a lower number than that of the average time of your regular videos.)
Now take that number and increase it by 20%, that should be the average length of your videos*. (Unless you chose to or plan on altering the style of content you are uploading soon then don't increase it, if you are changing the style of your content do that first and wait a while then repeat the previous and increase it by 20%) That increase is a starting point, 80% of your views comes from your subs and the left over 20% is from those that are not subscribed to you, and 80% of the time not watched in your videos is from those that are not subscribed to you so only 20% of the time not watched is from those that are.
Increasing the 20% (may or may not) help retain new viewers, and yes I know think of your subs too, once you have built a larger sub base or a sub count that you are comfortable with you can continue to review your "Average view duration" and increase by 20%, again and again over time.
-*This is only for your average/regular uploaded videos, the length of time on special vids or videos dedicated to one thing solely rely on you.
-This is also really for those that are looking to increase their views and sub count...
-This can also depend on the quality of your content...
-The "80%" and "20%" are an average figure.
Personally I need to shave a few minutes off my vids, according to this.
If you're like me and need to shave time off, you can upload more frequent with shorter vids, or have a break (something to distract the audience or change their focus to something else) for at least 4 seconds no more than 12 (depending on what you do of course). It's a refresh and they may continue to watch with a longer video.
