From the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute.
33,561 lives were lost in the United States in 2012.
Most people die collisions on a Friday, in July, between 3PM and 6PM which was the peek death rate in 2012. Up to 5 times more people died if they weren't using a seat belt. If you're male you are 3x more likely to be one of those killed. There's a good chance of those who died on the Friday in July were between the ages of 20 and 24. The good news is the rate of deaths on our highway today is approaching 1/2 of what it was in 1975, so the trend is less people are dying on our roads.
