Bratton (the new police commissioner) does the right thing. In order to crackdown on these devistating accidents you have to look into the infractions on both drivers' and pedestrians walking. Jaywalking was a focus and ofcourse people starting crying. This city's people think they can pick and choose what laws should be enforced. It s a joke.

Callahan Yes, especially the intersection of ocean parkway and church avenue. DOT built a more protected area in the center island for pedestrians. Problem is pedestrians are getting hit in the lanes of traffic not while in the center. I truly believe pedestrian crossing should be prohibited on that side of Church Avenue. More lives could be saved. What they did makes no sense to me.

Safety is EVERYONES responsibility. Drivers and pedestrians both. I can't tell you how many times I've driven at night on busy streets such as Flatbush Avenue and people jaywalk against the light, dressed in dark clothing and you don't see them until you are practically on top of them with your car. Or they decided to run behind your car as you are in the middle of reversing on your blind side. My biggest pet peeve. Folks need to pay attention. Drivers- get off the phone and stop texting. Pedestrians- your body is no match against a vehicle. SAFETY FIRST! Use the crosswalks and wait for the light. Your life is worth more than the additional 10 seconds you might have to wait for the light to change to cross safely.

The problem is twofold: speeding drivers & pedestrians either not paying attention or crossing against the light.

Perhaps the city should enforce pedestrian laws. It happens all the time that I will drive through a green light, blow the horn at a pedestrian who is crossing against the light. Then the pedestrian Will get angry with me.
