So what do you think, should we always pixelate out license plates and even faces or allow them to be shown.
FACES:
For me, I try to black out children's faces for a couple of reasons. First, they have nothing to do with not knowing how to behave like an adult and second is simply to keep them anonymous (it's not ever my intention to use a child to promote my videos). There are exceptions, like when a child does something really reckless and I have the hope that their parent or friend will see it and have a talk with the kid, but even this has age limits and I black out all faces of children younger than 12 years old.
For adults, I will show them if they're doing something reckless. If they are innocents bystanders I will try to black out their faces.
For interesting social videos I will also try to black out faces, reserving showing a face only if it has to do with public safety.
LICENSE PLATES:
This is a harder choice. I've noticed most YouTubers will show plates but some don't. Those that don't take the stand that they aren't the police and will not have their video's used as a tool for the police. I tend to show plates of offenders because they should be behaving properly and worry not about the offender but the person they're liable to run into in the future if their actions aren't curtailed.
What are your thoughts?
Keep in mind that blacking out a face, either through blurring, pixelation, or a solid color, is a very time consuming process. One has to create a mask that 'black out's' only the area in question while allowing the rest of the video to be seen. In a still image this is very easy to accomplish, but in a video where there is side to side and up and down motion it can be hard to continually adjust the mask's position. So if a videographer does black out faces/license plates they should be given a note of appreciation for the skill, time and effort to achieve the blackout.
